I am pretty sure all of you have heard the coined phrase "winning" by Charlie Sheen. If you are on twitter, #winning has been used a lot in reference to tangible or intangible items. Well I want to use it for a tangible item. I've recently been trying to enter giveaways and sweepstakes, at the small chance that I may be a winner!!! Imagine my surprise when trying to clean out my unread emails that I had won a $50 gift card to Igigi. Igigi is a contemporary designer of plus size clothing. I have always admired their clothes, but because of the price of their clothes, haven't been able to shop there as much as I want to.

I was thankful to find out that I won when I did(almost a week later), since they were having a sale for 20% off their dresses. So the gift card plus the discount actually made the dress I had my eye on affordable. The word is "winning!"

So now I wait for it to arrive and see if they match my shoes that I love. Hmmmm....I can only claim the responsibility on why my daughter is a little fashionista. She loves to match up clothes with shoes as much as I do! So what do you guys think of the shoes? Do I have a match?

They really should be illegal.....

Do you love ribs as much as I do??? Well I love beef ribs!! There is nothing better than the taste of a good barbecue sauce on top of them. Ribs happen to be one of lil mama's favorites.

I have attempted a few recipes and have found one that I absolutely adore. It is a higher on the sugar content, but it's well worth the splurge every now and again. You can check out "Should Be Illegal Oven BBQ Ribs" here . The recipe calls for a 12 ounce bottle of barbecue sauce. When I would make ribs before, I would use one of the cheaper ones like Kraft's BBQ sauce and just doctor it up. I came across Stubb's BBQ Sauce . It was on sale so I decided to try it out. The taste is wonderful! If you want to splurge, I do recommend it. It's also all natural and gluten free.

Is it really 2012???

Well I can't believe it's been over two years since my last blog! I hope everyone had wonderful Christmas, and brought the New Year in with a bang. I have decided in the New Year to try actively blogging again. So I am going to try and give updates now and again about what's been going on in the past two years. My lil mama is now nine going on thirty. If you had been following my blog you would know that I was considering whether or not to transition to public school. I am happy to say that transition was made last year and she is blossoming. My fashionista loves the fact that she doesn't have to wear uniforms anymore. Clothes, clothes and more clothes.....

Remember when it was dolls, dolls and more dolls........Well neither of us are actively collecting anymore. I still enjoy looking at them, but have been focusing my attention elsewhere. Nothing has really tugged at my heartstrings enough lately, for me to purchase one. That of course could still change. Lil mama normally buys me a Byron Lars barbie for Christmas, but I was just not feeling this year's doll. I am certainly enjoying the Michael Kors Gold perfume she gave me instead. It smells divine!

On another note, one of my goals this year is to begin using coupons more often. So if I find some worth sharing, I will be more than willing to share here. A friend of mine had told me over Thanksgiving that I need to make sure that any nail polish I let lil mama use is free of formaldehyde. I just happen to come across a brand of nail polish called Zoya. Lil Mama and I are hooked because of all the beautiful colors they have. I was able to get several during their flash deals leading up to Christmas. They now are offering a great deal where you get two nail polishes free, and you just pay for shipping. Check it out at the blog here. The last time I got a pedicure I took my own nail polish. It saves on time too since I don't have to look through all the colors.

Last Blog For 2009

I can't believe it's been over a month since I posted a new blog. Life has been keeping me very busy, and has been very interesting to say the least. I've learned very recently that sometimes God will give you the same circumstances that you thought you had overcome, to see how well you handle them the next go round. As I've tried to become more spiritually mature, it still isn't as easy to do the right thing, or should I say what is best for me. I still find myself in daily struggles trying to find the peace that I want in my life. I am still trying to fix things that I have no business in fixing.

As I look forward to 2010, I am striving to make myself LET GO and LET GOD! If I want peace, I need to learn to look deep inside of myself to find it with God's help. He alone can truly grant me what I need. This past week the pastor quoted one of the scriptures that I really needed to hear:

²⁸ Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28, New King James Version)

I am leaving all of my burdens of 2009 with God! I am letting go and letting God! I will begin 2010 with a new outlook on life, and a new sense of purpose.

May God grant you peace and prosperity in the upcoming year. Happy New Year to All!

Blessed Assurance

I haven't had a lot of time to blog lately, but wanted to post something today. As Thanksgiving approaches, it reminds me of how much I have to be thankful for. The most precious gift is my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We are so blessed to have been "born of His Spirt, and washed in His blood."

¹⁹ Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, ²⁰ by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, ²¹ and having a High Priest over the house of God, ²² let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. ²³ Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. ²⁴ And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, ²⁵ not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. A Few Books in a Few Weeks

Surprisingly, I have actually read a few books in the past few weeks. I think I can attribute it to reading during Lil Mama's activities. These three books were not my favorite books of all time, but they were entertaining. Out of the bunch, Sin No More was probably my favorite. This book is part of the series with the Curtis Black character. I have always felt Kimberla Lawson Roby was a great author, and I love reading her books.

Double Cross by James Patterson was pretty good, but I liked the book Cross better. There are still some thrilling moments though!

You Belong To Me was recommended by a friend of mine. It was a quick read with a little bit of romance and mystery. If you read it let me know if you figure out "who done it." LOL!!

I am currently reading Because of Grace by Kendra Norman-Bellamy. She is a christian author and I absolutely love her books. I had read the #1 and #3 already in this series, so I am backtracking to #2. I am sure this book will not disappoint, but I will share after I read it.

Hasbro's Lorifina

The Lorifina dolls were offered by Hasbro earlier this year, where you could design your own, by picking her skin color, hair, eye color and clothes. Lil Mama loved playing on the website and designing different dolls. I decided that this was a doll that we could "play" with together. So we each had to have one. Another Great Find in 2009

I had been wanting this little girl for awhile, but U.S. doll stores didn't carry her. I also didn't want to pay high shipping charges if she was sent from overseas. As luck would have it, I was able to find a doll shop in the UK that was selling Nora. The company's name is Nubidollz, and their shipping price wasn't bad. Their website doesn't seem to be functional, otherwise I would share it with you. Here is a link to her ebay store though.

Well the doll is Nora by Ruth Treffeisen. I love everything about this little girl. She is made of vinyl and is absolutely adorable.

I would love for Ruth Treffeisen to make another black doll this size.

You've Already Paid For The Tickets!

This is what my Lil Mama told me this morning when I said I didn't feel like going to Disney On Ice tonight. I try to get tickets at least once a year. They come to the Baltimore area twice a year. I really enjoy it once I get there, but I am tired and don't feel like going. Nobody told Lil Mama to be so smart and to point out that I would be wasting money if I didn't go!

Organization Is Key To Lots of Activities

This fall Lil Mama is involved in three activities. Awana(a Christ-centered youth program), gymnastics and swimming. All three of these activities were to start upon the return from Hawaii. She has been to two Awana meetings and has earned the right to buy her vest and handbook by reciting John 3:16. We missed the first gymnastics class because there was an accident and I didn't pick up Lil Mama until the start time of the class. Gymnastics is 25 minutes away, so she didn't start that until last week. Swimming started this past weekend....or so I thought. When I looked at the schedule of the class, I had it in my mind that this past weekend was the start date. It didn't matter that the dates didn't coincide with that. So we arrived at swimming at the YMCA. Her old camp counselor was at the front desk and I asked her where did we need to go. She said it doesn't start til next weekend. The light bulb goes on, and I let out a groan. A groan not only because I was there on the wrong day, but because I had gone early to pick Lil Mama up from my sister's where she had spent the night. Lil Mama was not ready to leave and she could have actually stayed there longer. At that point her old counselor said to just go into the class, and that the instructor wouldn't mind. Thank God!! Lil Mama was thrilled that she got a ribbon for completing the class, even though she was only there one day.

After all of that Lil Mama's day was not done. She had to go home and then get ready to go to a Zeta Phi Beta function with my girlfriend and her daughter. My mother told me that Lil Mama has a better social life than I do. LOL!

She may possibly be in four activities for a short time in the spring. Pray for me please!! As you can see organization is certainly needed to keep track of all the activities.

Another Special Doll For 2009

This doll was small enough for me to display without the fear of it getting broken and having to have a curio cabinet for it. She is also wearing my favorite color of pink. Well here she is!

Slow Cooker Chicken Stroganoff

This is another recipe that I had found on allrecipes.com. It has become a favorite of both Lil Mama and I. I'll post below the recipe, what changes I normally make.

INGREDIENTS
4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cubed
1/8 cup margarine
1 (.7 ounce) package dry Italian-style salad dressing mix
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of chicken soup

DIRECTIONS
Put chicken, margarine and dressing mix in slow cooker; mix together and cook on low for 5 to 6 hours.
Add cream cheese and soup, mix together and cook on high for another 1/2 hour or until heated through and warm.

This is an easy recipe to play around with. I typically don't cube my chicken ahead of time. In fact I normally put frozen chicken breasts in the crockpot. If your chicken is already cleaned, then there is no need to thaw it out. The chicken comes out great. Also, I don't wait to put the soup in. I put it in at the beginning. I use 2 cans of soup though. One can cream of chicken and one can cream of mushroom. If you have extra cans of mushrooms, I would throw that in the beginning too. I also like to throw some extra seasoning in there like garlic powder and pepper. If you have some onions, you can throw that in there as well. You may even want to add a dash or two of worcester sauce. You see how easy it is to get carried away with adding ingredients. At the end I not only put in the cream cheese but also a container of sour cream. The end result is soooooooooo worth it. The reason I throw in the extra can of soup because I LOVE the sauce that this makes. In fact each time I make this, I say I am going to make it without the chicken and just have a nice, rich soup.

I made this dish last night for our dinner this evening. We are going to have it served over fresh whole wheat pasta. This dish is also great over brown rice(I'll share in another blog how to make some yummy brown rice that isn't instant). If you want to cut calories, you can use reduced fat or reduced sodium soups. You can also use the reduced fat cream cheese and sour cream. You can easily make this dish your own with your changes, but I thought I would share how I make it!

What an awesome thing to know that Jesus Christ died so that we could live. Whenever you are going through trials just remember what Jesus endured for us. We need to be rejoicing in the midst of our trials knowing, that your faith is being tested. What a wonderful way to glorify God by enduring our trials and keeping our faith in Him. The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

I recently watched the first season of this series on DVD. I had to say that I fell in love with the two lead characters played by Jill Scott and Anika Noni Rose. The story is based on the book series which I had never heard of. After watching the first series I also plan on reading the books. The story takes place in Botswana, where Jill Scott's character's father dies and she inherits cows. She sells these cows to start a dective agency. She hires Anika Noni Rose's character as her secretary. You feel several different emotions when watching these stories. I can't wait til the second season comes out on DVD.

A Late Mothers Day Present

My Lil Mama had picked out this doll for me for Mothers Day. Well they kept pushing back her release date and she just arrived. This is the Integrity Toys Basic Edition "Go" by Jason Wu. Pink is one of Lil Mama's favorite colors which is why she chose her.

She has the ability to do bend backwards, so you can pose her a little different than the standard dolls with no articulation. She'll be fun to play with!

Lil Mama couldn't believe she took this long to arrive. Better late than never.

Grandmother's Buttermilk Cornbread

Well not my grandmother's...but somebody's. I figured I would post every now and again, a recipe that I have found and absolutely loved. I passed it on to family and friends and they love it too. I found the recipe at allrecipes.com. Here it is:

INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup butter
2/3 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 cup buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8 inch square pan.
Melt butter in large skillet. Remove from heat and stir in sugar. Quickly add eggs and beat until well blended. Combine buttermilk with baking soda and stir into mixture in pan. Stir in cornmeal, flour, and salt until well blended and few lumps remain. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

I generally will add or change things to recipes that I've found, but there was no need with this one. Lil Mama and I even have it for dessert with lots of butter.

Hard to Choose a Favorite

This has been a good doll year, in that I have received several dolls that I have been smitten with. Anisha by Heidi Plusczok is one of them. She has such a sweet and innocent face that you can't help but be taken by her.

Thanksgiving Menu

Well it will be that time again in a little over a month. It's usually around this time that I send out a spreadsheet to my family, so people can write in what item they will be responsible for. Our menu can be quite extensive, which is why we need the spreadsheet. We will have a smaller crowd this year, so my suggestion was instead of sending out the list, that if you want it, then you make it. We typically have over 30 people. New Experiences

This past weekend I attended the Lady Baltimore Doll Show. I was accompanied by my daughter, Lil Mama, and her "little sister," Corey. They have been classmates for the past three years. Lil Mama has been to several doll shows, but this was Corey's first time. The girls were treated like royalty since they happened to be the only kids there. They were each given a doll and Lil Mama also received a bear from a vendor. They also got to load up on lots of candy at the different tables. I even won a door prize!

Both girls were very excited in viewing each table. They would ooooooohhhhhh and ahhhhhhhh each time they saw a doll that they liked. I think Corey's excitement rubbed off on Lil Mama, and they just had a ball together. Corey has told her mother in the past that she needs to have a wall of dolls like I do. Well the day after the show she was still telling her mother that she needed dolls, and talking excitedly about the doll show.

It's a wonderful thing to expose kids to new experiences. They may not love every event you go to, but you never know til you try. So why not try taking your kids or even grandkids to a new place or an event. Whether it's a museum, an off broadway or broadway show, a new park, the lake or beach, or even something as simple as trying a new restaurant. Those experiences will help encourage them to try new things.

A Breath of Fresh Air

One of the activities I was determined to do while in Hawaii is parasailing. The last time I did it was in the Bahamas, 15 years ago. I enjoyed it so much then, that I wanted to do it at least one more time before my time here on earth was over. Five of my family members participated in the event. My sister, brother and twin nephews all enjoyed the experience. You feel like you are floating on air. It's wonderful to be able to look down and see the beautiful landscapes and scenery. I went up with my brother just so I could have more time in the air. If you've never done it before, I highly recommend it. I plan on trying to parasail at least one more time.

Remember when I talked about getting a doll in the mail, that it feels like Christmas. Well it felt like Christmas the day after I arrived back from Hawaii and received my Aboriginal doll by Wendy Frank. I had a few packages waiting for me and this was the most exciting. The anticipation was great in opening the package, but this doll didn't disappoint. I love her. She is very unique, and is a great addition to my collection. I've named her Janiah.

Satan has many weapons that he uses against God's children. Sickness, debt, depression, bad relationships and so on. What God has promised us is that that no matter what Satan uses to attack us, he will not suceed. How awesome is it that we serve such a wonderful God, knowing that He always has our back. He is always there, even in the midst of our troubles. Victory is always on the side of our Heavenly Father.

Just remember when Satan is using those weapons against us, to stand on God's promise. God will always prevail!

"Basketball Jones" by E. Lynn Harris

I can't believe it, but I've actually finished another book this month. Of course E. Lynn Harris' books are always a breeze for me to get through because they are so entertaining. Now this book wasn't a five star one for me but four stars. While it was entertaining, it was slightly predictable. If you want a light and easy read though. Check it out.

A Dream Realized

In the world of doll collecting you hear a lot of collectors say I wish I had this doll(fill in the blank), if I only I had the money. It's generally a dream to find the doll at a price we can afford or are willing to pay. Well recently, I was able to fulfill a dream to own a doll by Sarah Niemela. Her dolls were generally not at a price I wanted to pay - too expensive. Well I was able to find one on the secondary market at a reasonable price. This is an one-of-a-kind doll sculpted of polymer clay and her name is Keisha. She actually attaches to a walnut base, but I found her pictures were better without it. She had a little mishap in transit, and her toe was broken. I glued it back on, and the seller is hoping to get a partial refund through the shipping company. Regardless, I am in love with this little girl, and hope to realize more dreams of owning more Sarah Niemela dolls. Here are her pics.

A Very Special Doll

Once a year I typically try to get a special doll done for my birthday. Well this year was an OOAK by Ping Lau. You can view her work here.

My little girl is around 12 inches tall and wearing my favorite color. She didn't come with shoes, but I found some sandals that would fit her. Another request was that she would be holding a doll. Here are some pictures of her. Can you see any resemblance to my daughter?

I belong to an online doll club called We Love Black Dolls. Our club doll for 2008 just happened to be one from Ping Lau but done in resin. My special girl this year was done in clay. They display really well together. Here is my girl displayed with our club doll Zahara.

Stay tuned to see what my special doll will be for next year. I think I already have in mind what she will be.

Cirque Polynesia

I saw my first Cirque du Soleil(French for Circus of the Sun), Mystère, in Las Vegas earlier this year. I truly enjoyed the show, and had decided, given the opportunity, I would see as many of them as I could. Well the opportunity arose while I was in Hawaii a couple of weeks ago. Cirque Polynesia was showing at the Hyatt. While the show was much smaller than the venues in Vegas, the show did not disappoint. I wasn't able to take pictures during the show, but I did take some before and after.

A Lesson From "The Princess and the Frog"

My daughter and I watched "Snow White" the other day on DVD. On the DVD was the first six minutes of the upcoming movie "The Princess and the Frog." The color wasn't completely filled in on every scene, but watching it got me really excited for the movie to be released. Just in that short span we learn how important it is to be supportive of our kids and to always encourage their dreams. In thinking about that movie I realized that it's important to not only be supportive of the things our kids want to do, but be encouraging of things that they do that may not be so "important." It can be something just as small as braiding hair for example.

I've mentioned before that my daughter is six. She will be seven next month. This year, we've been getting our hair braided a lot. Well one day she came out of her room and said "Mommy, look what I did." She had braided her dolls hair and put rubber bands on the end to hold the braids. I may be biased but I thought the braids were really good for a six year old. I know I couldn't braid my dolls hair at six. I asked her where she had learned how to do it, and she said she taught herself. My guess is she had watched some of what my girlfriend was doing in braiding our hair, and then proceeded to do it on her dolls hair.

On our trip to Hawaii, she also had fun braiding and styling the hair of So In Style Stylin Hair Grace. I enjoyed watching her do it.

I bring up all of this to say this is one of the areas that I realize I should encourage her in. I am not trying to pre-define what her permanent job will be in the future, but this could definitely be a skill set that she could possibly make money on the side, if she chose to. She may braid other people's hair in high school or even college, to have a little spare change. Or this could be what she chooses as her profession. Maybe she does neither, and after marrying has a baby girl. She will be able to save money, by not sending her child to the hairdresser, and doing her hair herself. In either of the scenarios the outcome is positive.

So make sure to not only encourage the dreams of your children, but give them the all important praise and affirmations for "insignificant"(no not really) things like braiding hair.

My co-worker informed me about this book a few weeks ago. She mentioned that it was one of her favorite books growing up, and that a movie was being released. I ordered the book here, in anticipation of the movie. Lil Mama and I read the book together, and now she can't wait to see the movie.

We all go through trials and tribulations, but once that particular trial is done do you ever look back and wonder how you go through it? Well it's through God's grace and mercy, that we were able to get over that hump in the road of life. My Favorite Black Barbie

Time to Make a Change

I have been waiting for some Princess Tiana bedding to come out so I can redecorate Lil Mama's room. Well ItsME has so kindly pointed me in the right direction.(Thanks again!) The only problem is my daughter has a full bed and this set only comes in twin size. It's available here at Sears. The throw and pillow set is a nice alternative while I wait on the full size set.

Target also has a nice set here. Yet again, the problem is still the same. No full size set.

Can We Go Out to Dinner?

Which restaurant is your child's favorite place to eat? Lil Mama loves a lot of places, but if I were to pick one it would be IHOP. Anyone that has gone out to eat with her knows that she will order bacon, scrambled eggs with cheese, and pancakes. It used to be that I could order the kids meal and that would fill her up. Now if she has that, she will eat in five minutes and then proceed to eat off my plate. So I have to order from the regular menu. She gets so excited when she knows we are off to the restaurant. Her eyes light up and she talks a mile a minute. We don't get to eat there often, but it certainly fills me with joy to give her the simple pleasure of a meal at IHOP for bacon, scrambled eggs with cheese and pancakes. Make sure to put that same smile on your child's face from time to time. They grow up so fast.

Well Worth the Wait!

Two Fridays ago, after much anticipation I finally got to see Maxwell in concert again after several years. I truly love this man as an artist, and he didn't disappoint in this concert. He was "on fire!" It was a nice mix of his new music and his older music. It's amazing to see how far he has come, to putting on a simple concert with not a lot of lights to a spectacular show with amazing backgrounds. If he is coming to a city near you, make sure you get your ticket!

Maxwell was not alone of course. Chrisette Michele was the opening act. I was not disappointed with her performance, but in the amount of songs she sang. She only sang 3 or 4 songs. I will be glad when she is allowed to be a bigger part of a concert.

After Chrisette, was a man whose songs I am not all that familiar with. His part of the show was awesome though. Common was excellent and I truly enjoyed his performance. I am searching now for his music to purchase.

The combination of these three singers made one fantastic concert. I am so tempted to buy a ticket to the one on the 23rd. So tempting......

A Rare Occurrence

I just returned yesterday from a wonderful vacation in Hawaii. I will blog more about that trip later, but I just wanted to share something that rarely happens on my vacations. I actually started and finished a book. I was having a problem with my knee, so I wasn't trying to do a lot of things at every waking moment. The book was a quick read for me, and I was able to read it in two short sittings. I've been very behind on keeping up with the latest novels, especially those by E. Lynn Harris. I have always loved him as an author and he surely didn't disappoint in "Mama Dearest." This book brings back characters that we have seen in his previous books. It was very entertaining and I certainly recommend it. As I've done with his previous books I give it 5 out of 5 stars. I will by reading "Basketball Jones" by E. Lynn Harris next.

Not just any documentary -- any MOVIE! It was, as the studio said, a good indicator of just how well the movie may do when it goes wide this weekend. I sincerely hope they're right because I believe deeply in this film.
To kick off the national release of "Capitalism: A Love Story," I've asked the studio to offer a number of screenings in the nation's hardest hit cities -- the ones with the highest unemployment rates and highest foreclosure rates -- where those who've lost their jobs or who are in foreclosure (or have already been evicted) may attend my film free of charge. They've agreed, and so tonight (Thursday), the night before our opening day, ten cities will grant you free admission if you have fallen on hard times. The list of theaters and cities is below. You don't need to bring any "proof" of your situation -- just show up -- it's the honor system, no questions asked.
Of course, a free movie ain't much when what you really need is a job or a place to live. And that's not going to change until the party that controls both the Congress and the White House wakes up and realizes the American people put them in charge to fix the mess created by the previous administration. For that to happen requires the active involvement of each of us. And, as I show in this movie, it's going to also require us to challenge some fundamental assumptions about an economic system that currently allows the wealthiest ONE PERCENT in this country to have more financial wealth than the bottom 95% combined. That concentration of money and power in the hands of so few people is, I believe, at the core of so many of our problems.
So, if you're going through tough times and you live in one of the areas below, please be my guest tonight, on the eve of my new film's opening. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis.
Also, in another five cities tonight, I have made the film available to local groups to hold benefit screenings to raise money for their local organizations -- organizations which are working toward a day when a filmmaker doesn't have to offer free screenings to people who've been put through the wringer. If you live in any of these areas (see below for the list of benefit premieres tonight), please come out and support the good work of these grassroots groups.

The title is not only catchy but it's the truth!! Why would you want to stick around with someone and be in a horrible situation? Sometimes it is just time to LET GO!! "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" is Tyler Perry's latest movie. I am a big fan of his plays, but the movies tend to be just okay for me. Well this movie was an exception. Not only did you laugh, but you also will shed some tears. Of course, as a friend of mine says, I just had allergies. Make sure you check out this movie. Taraji Henson did a great job.

Feels Like Christmas

Are you an online shopper like me? Do you love opening your packages when you receive them in the mail? Do you sit and watch for that brown truck to come around the corner, when you are waiting for something special? Well I love getting packages in the mail. The excitement of opening the box is like opening a box at Christmas, except you know what you are getting. As a doll collector, I tend to get a lot of my items on eBay. I like winning but don't like having to wait til the end of the auction to bid. I want instant gratification. I recently read a blog by Debbie Garrett about the dolls by Wendy Frank. After reading it, I NEEDED to get one of her dolls. I found two on eBay at the time. One caught my attention, and the waiting began til the end of the auction. With 30 seconds left to go, I placed my bid and 30 seconds later I had won the auction. I am soon to have in my collection an Aboriginal OOAK by Wendy Frank - Birthday Girl 09/09/09. Thanks to Wendy I am posting the pictures from the auction.

Isn't she adorable? Here is the information on how she was made from her auction.

"A brief description

I start with a mould of the face, which is then cast with a composition of paper mache & hardening products, After many hours drying a material is stretched, manipulated and glued to the face. (Using waterproof glues) The head is then hand sewn up the back & stuffed with Synthetic Filler.

Once this is done the time consuming painting of the face begins, some faces are completely painted and then detailed but others have the features painted only. Many layers are applied to create the unique and beautiful colouring of the aborigine and great care is taken to do this beautiful face justice.

The body is made with cotton material and filled with same fill as head. Fingers & toes are hand stitched to make them more real & each doll is signed, named & numbered, most Wendy Frank dolls are one of a kind (OOAK) In which case this is written on the back of the doll, not numbered.

Clothes are designed, made & sometimes painted by Wendy & each is unique.

Here is a new doll website that is not quite finished yet, but is certainly intriguing. Lil Mama loves to go websites where she can design stuff, and actually has created a doll through Hasbro. I'll have to share a picture of our Lorifinas at a later date. It is nice to see dolls come out with realistic features. I won't be showing Lil Mama the website yet, because I don't want to keep hearing "is it done yet?" I can't wait to see the finished product. In Dolls Like Me's newsletter, they mention that they are supposed to be ready for Christmas and priced around $79. I will post again once the website is finished. My passion and hobby is collecting dolls. I collect mainly black dolls and as of this moment I have no true focus in my collection except they are black and they speak to my heart. A visit to my cousin Nikki at college years ago is what triggered this passion. In her room, she had this beautiful barbie displayed. I asked where she got it from, and I recall her saying she ordered her from a magazine. When we were younger we would spend hours upon hours playing with our barbies. We would watch soap operas and then re-enact the stories with the dolls. We'd style, cut, and even crimp our dolls hair. Those were fun times! Well after returning from that trip, I was on a mission to hunt that doll down. Much to my chagrin, the doll was no longer available to buy. I did eventually get her some years later, and by then there were several dolls in my collection. In the beginning, my only focus in dolls were that they were Barbie. Here is the doll that ignited the flame. This is In the Limelight by Byron Lars. Isn't she pretty?

When I got pregnant, I prayed for a healthy baby but my desire was for a girl. God granted me my wish and Lil Mama was born. She was only one month on her first Christmas, but guess what; she got the Holiday Barbie from that year. Every Christmas she gets the new Holiday Barbie. I not only collect dolls for myself, but I give her dolls that she can not only play with but are collector items as well. I am quite pleased that she shares my passion for dolls. Here is a picture that my nephew drew of her holding a doll. He is VERY talented.

It saddens me to hear of people that make fun of doll collectors. I don't quite understand what the difference is for those that collect dolls or even play video games. It's a hobby that people enjoy. Hobbies keep us young, and help give us that much needed break from our day to day lives. So if you don't have a hobby that your passionate about, go find one!! Let's always stay forever young!!

Music Speaks To The Soul

I come from a family full of musicians. I grew up listening to lots of different music. My father always used to joke with me when I would say a song was my favorite. He would say, "they are all your favorites." That's probably the truth. I just love good music. It has always been a dream of mine to be proficient on an instrument or an accomplished singer. Alas, the musical gene didn't pass down to me. One of my goals in life is to take vocal lessons, so at least my singing voice sounds better than what it currently does.

I listen to music whether I'm happy, sad, or even angry. It soothes my soul. Earlier this year, my divorce became final. I thought I would be really sad about it, but it was more like a relief that it was over. It feels like life has begun again, and I am certainly living it. I want to share song that has become my theme song following the divorce. This girl is talented!! I am actually very excited to see Chrisette Michele tomorrow, along with Maxwell and Common. Let me know what you think of the song.

Why "Who's The Mama Here?"

Well I honestly thought it would be fun to start a blog. I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to focus on, but thought I would just post miscellaneous thoughts and happenings on my journey that I call life. I've been told on several occasions that my six year old daughter "has been here before." Some of the things she says are really outlandish, and it's hard sometimes to keep a straight face. I really do wonder sometimes "Who's The Mama" because it's almost as if she tries to take care of me. She is certainly a blessing to me, and think she is growing up beautifully without a father who is active in her life. It can be difficult for parents who have to be both the mother and the father, but with God's help it is possible to raise self-confident child. My Lil Mama is the love of my life and she certainly makes life interesting. Until the next time......
